Wastewater flow and sensor technology

The Technology Stack

A smart sewer system is built on three layers: sensing (IoT devices collecting data underground), intelligence (AI/ML platforms analyzing that data), and control (automated systems acting on insights in real time). Together, they turn a passive pipe network into an intelligent, self-optimizing system.

Most deployments start with sensors — typically level monitors in manholes and flow meters in trunk sewers. The data feeds cloud platforms running hydraulic models and ML algorithms that predict problems hours or days ahead. The most advanced systems close the loop with automated valves and gates that reroute flow without human intervention.
